AbstractAgent based population is fundamental to the micro-simulation of various dynamic urban eco- and social systems. This paper surveys the basic theories and methods of hybrid agent modeling in population simulation emerged recent years. We first introduce the framework of this hybrid agent based population generation. The current approaches of initial database synthesis including sample based and sample free methods are then discussed in detail, followed by a brief comparison of these methods. In addition, the major types and characteristics of agent models and their applications are also reviewed. Finally, we conclude by outlining the future directions of population research using agent technology
