Other Abstractn DWT- based i mage compression ,as t he codi ng rate becomes low,t he Cuality of t he coded i mage degrades severely due to t he Cuantization of wavelet coefficients and t he removal of hi gh-freCuency wavelet coefficients. Especially ,i n t he vici nity of edges,t he ri ngi ng effect i nevitably comes up. I n t his paper ,a multiscale 2D filteri ng met hod based on local pri mary direction is i nvesti gated which may si gnificantly i mprove t he Cuality of t he i mage compressed. By t he met hod,l ocal pri mary direction is detected first ,accordi ng to which t he i mage was filtered adaptively. To ensure t he robust ness of t he detection of t he local pri mary direction ,a circular shift met hod is adopted. To remove t he hi gh-freCuency noises i n all t he bands,t he decoded i mage is enhanced from coarse to fi ne scales. The si mulation results illustrate t hat t he met hod proposed may i mprove t he Cuality and t he visual effect of t he compressed i mages.
