The integration of the telecommunication technology and the multimedia technology, has brought the unprecedented development in the information field. In an intelligent communication system, there are many important questions waiting for us to do deep research, such as how to manage the data, how to access the regular data and the multimedia data efficiently and flexibly. In the first part of this thesis, we do research on the fast transmission of the multimedia data on the local area networks. A method for transmitting arbitrary size of data blocks between multiple PCs is put forward and implemented. As the essential part of a multimedia communication system, we developed a multi-database management platform under the Open Database Connectivity(ODBC) standard. It makes the system to be able to access data in heterogeneous relational databases in the Visual C++ environment. At the same time, the system can access the Object-Oriented multimedia data managed by the Object Linking and Embedding(OLE) technology. The third part of this thesis is about research on the Object-Oriented management of the multimedia data. The OLE technology is used to implement a container application. OLE data objects coming from distributed computers on the networks can be embedded in the Compound Document. The implementation of the container application by using the OLE technology is also a practice of system construction by using the most recently developed software technology--the component software technology. This is one of the basic steps we have walked out for the intelligent system integration, using the component software method.
