Recent years have seen a growing interest in location-aware computation and location-aware services. The key of location-aware services is to acquire positions of human beings and objects in indoor environment, and that makes indoor location systems the foundation of location-aware services. On the other hand, many new wireless network technologies such as WLAN, Bluetooth, RFID and UWB have emerged with the development of computer and embedded techniques. These wireless networks provides new solutions for indoor location systems. Compared to them, ZigBee is low-cost, low-power and low-data rate. In this thesis, an indoor location system based on ZigBee network is proposed. The main work and contribution in this thesis includes: 1)After analyzing the research background and advances of location systems and the ZigBee protocol, the design of an indoor location system based on ZigBee network is proposed. The major advantages of the proposed system is low-cost, low-power and easy to implement. 2) According to the characteristic of the ZigBee and IEEE802.15.4 protocol, the detailed design of indoor location system based on ZigBee network is presented. The functions of ZigBee nodes in the system are analyzed and the implementation of programs on the nodes is given. 3) For systems based on RF fingerprinting, the parameters of received signal strength(RSS) limit the location accuracy. In the thesis the parameters of RSS in ZigBee network in indoor environment are analyzed combined with large amounts of experiments and data. The influence of RSS on the location results and system parameter selection is obtained and verified through the experiment. Moreover, the results of other parameters' in°uence on system performance are given.
