Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM ) is great treasure of our national culture, and its research object — human body itself is a typical complex system. There are two important research trends of TCM modernization: one is to change from a simple linear system to an open complex system, and the other one is to integrate TCM with complex system science, information theory, and mathematics science. My research project has been supported by subprojects of the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) "Information Processing Methods and Complex System Modeling Research for TCM Syndrome" and "Collateral and Vascular System Disorders’ Correlation Research and Treatment". According to the project requirement, I have completed the following work: 1. Entropy theory’s application in complex system partition Complex system partition is an important research area in field of complex system sciences. Currently, wide ranges of approaches have been developed, such as correlation coefficient method, logistic regression analysis, cluster analysis, classification based on association rules and Bayes classification. These methods have obvious deficiency when applied in TCM complex data. Therefore, entropy partition theory for complex system has been proposed completely and applied respectively to various types of TCM complex data with satisfactory results. First of all, we define the correlative measures among variables and among subsystems based on entropy. Based on correlative measure, we propose and prove the proposition of N-class association in order to solve the computation problem theoretically. Furthermore, we improve the entropy partition method to be applicable to continuous variables, and discuss the subsystem number of partition result and the element number of subsystem. Finally, we apply this entropy partition method to various types of TCM complex data, and results show its superiority over methods mentioned before. This entropy partition theory provides a new way for analyzing the correlation among diagnostic symptoms information, physicochemical information and syndromes information quantitatively. 2. Entropy theory’s application in disease diagnostic criteria Therapy with syndrome differentiation is the core of TCM theory, and establishment of standardized diagnostic criteria is the key part of TCM modernization research. We apply entropy theory completely in the whole process of establishing diagnostic criteria for the first time. And th...
